Camera Image Quality

The DR770X-2CH includes front and rear cameras that capture the action no matter which direction it comes from. Both cameras take advantage of an advanced Sony STARVIS CMOS sensor that is backlighted for low-light image capture. The camera produces images at 2.1 megapixels and video at 1080p. Both front and rear cameras use the same sensor.

The front camera can record video at up to 60 frames per second. The rear camera captures at 30 frames per second, which is the industry standard for rear cameras. Both cameras capture images at 139 degrees. This is an ideal viewing angle for dash cam captures.

Recording Modes

The BlackVue DR770X offers continuous recording of both cameras. Files are saved in one-minute increments with about 15-second intervals between each file when the camera is recording in normal mode. A built-in g-sensor can detect impacts, hard braking, and rapid acceleration. These conditions trigger the event recording mode, creating a saved file separate from the regular files. The driver can also trigger a manual recording that creates a saved file.BlackVue DR770X connectivity

Accessing Files

Built-in Wi-Fi is one of the great BlackVue features you’ll find with the DR770X. Wi-Fi makes it easy to download videos to a smartphone. This is significantly more convenient than ejecting the SD card to access videos and is a feature we didn’t know we needed until we started using dashcams with Wi-Fi. Drivers can also use an abbreviated version of BlackVue Cloud storage or purchase access to the Cloud for greater storage.

Special Modes and Features

A dash cam is great for capturing things that happen while driving, but the DR770X can also record when you are parked. The package includes a hardwire kit that makes it easy to hook up so the camera will capture events when parked. It includes a built-in battery monitor that prevents the car battery from discharging. You can also add an optional battery pack that will power the camera without connecting to the car wiring.BlackVue DR770X 2Ch dashcam

Pros

  • Full HD recording on both cameras.
  • Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi functionalities.
  • Supports microSD cards up to 256GB.
  • Provides cloud compatibility.
  • Features parking mode with voice notifications.

Cons

  • External LTE module, not built-in.
  • High-temperature cut-off at 80°C.

What We Like About the DR770X

Right off the bat, the design of the DR770X is excellent. The camera looks and feels like a high-quality piece. Installation is easy using the included hardwire kit. Setting up the camera is done on the BlackVue app, which we find to be a convenient and straightforward way to change settings and view video files. Image quality is quite good considering the lower resolution and the limits of the 2.1 mp sensor, but low light images are very difficult to see fine details. Check how it performs against the DR970X.

What We Don’t Like

We expected this camera to offer many of the same features as similar BlackVue cameras, but we were quite surprised at the low-resolution capabilities considering the initial cost of the camera. Since the DR770X has most of the same features, functions, and the same appearance as other models, we would spend a bit more for higher resolution.

Conclusion

BlackVue is one of our favorite dash cam companies; their products are all high quality. The DR770X is a good camera package offering numerous functions and features, but we recommend drivers spend just a few dollars more and get a camera with better resolution.
