Sensor and Lens

On paper, this is a great camera. The manufacturer claims a true 4k resolution using the advanced Sony IMX335 sensor. The camera captures video through an ultra-wide angle 170-degree lens with wide dynamic range to capture details. This combination will give you clear, detailed images with limited blur and frameshift.

Storage

Videos are recorded in user-selectable time frames from one minute to three minutes. They are stored on an SD card that is not included. You can use up to a 258 gb SD card with this camera to ensure that you always capture the videos. The camera will automatically overwrite non-locked videos when the card runs out of space, so a larger card works better.

WiFi and GPS

Built-in WiFi and the manufacturer’s app provide customers with an easy way to access stored footage remotely without having to remove the SD card. The app takes advantage of built-in GPS to create a road map that can be laid over Google Maps to show an accurate route that was driven. You can even use voice controls to download videos and share them on social media.

Parking Mode and G-Sensor

The V5 features a G-sensor and a supercapacitor for enabling parking mode. The G-sensor works to instantly turn on the camera when a shock is felt, like when involved in an accident. You can hardwire the installation of this camera using an optional wiring harness to enable parking mode that automatically begins recording even when your car is parked.

Adding Other Cameras

The camera is module-compatible, so you can add a rear-facing camera or a cabin camera for added security and entertainment value. You’ll need to use a REXING camera in order for it to be compatible with the V5.

Practical Experiences

Problems With Resolution

REXING V5

This camera seems to be a top competitor in its price range. The features list is immense and it’s rare to find a camera that shoots in 4k. So rare in fact that this manufacturer claims something that is blatantly false. From the Sony website, the IMX335 sensor captures at a maximum of 2592×1944 pixels, which is less than the 3840×2160 resolution of a 4k camera. The manufacturer even describes this camera as capable of “up to 2160”, which is not 4k resolution.

App Problems

One of the biggest drawbacks to this particular brand is the app. It is frequently out of date, rarely works correctly, and is a true pain to use for downloading videos. Most of the features don’t work and the app maker has not improved the app in years.

The poor performance of the app makes this entire system a let-down. It means that you’ll have an easier time removing the SD card and downloading files onto your laptop than just simply opening the app and downloading them. In our book, this is unacceptable at this price point.

Problems With Adding On

Right away, you’ll notice that this camera comes pretty much ready to use, but only as a temporary camera. In order to use advanced features like the parking mode option, you’ll need to buy a separate wiring harness. In effect, you are paying more for a camera that has a feature you want, then having to spend even more money just to make it work.

There is no included SD card and you have to buy a specific type of card to use in this camera. Many cameras at this price point include a 32 gb card that, while inadequate for long-term use- at least lets you record video right out of the box.

What We Like About The V5

There are a few things we do like about this camera. Even though the resolution isn’t what is advertised, the camera does a nice job of capturing video. The 30 fps rating is a little lower than we’d like to see at this price point, but it is acceptable for the needs of most drivers. We like the mount this camera uses. It holds the rather large body of the camera securely with very little vibration. The V5 is also rated to withstand temperatures up to 172-degrees, making it a good choice for people who live in hot climates.

Final Verdict

We want to like this camera, but a few things get in the way. The outright flasities on the description are a really poor choice by the manufacturer in a day and age where information is merely a Google search away. Worse, the customer service experience is one of the most terrible experiences possible. The company rarely returns emails, is stubborn about returning defective products, and many buyers have said they were forced to go through Amazon in order to force REXING to refund money even after the product was returned and received. We would pass on this product simply because of the bad service, outright falsities in the description, and an app that isn’t supported.
